Building A Cardboard Fort

You have to consider that cardboard boxes aren’t only used for storage. It can also be used as playthings that your children will surely love. With a few cardboard boxes, you will be able to make a fort where your kids can relive the medieval times.

Basically, it is quite easy to make a fort out of cardboard boxes. All you need are a bunch of used cardboard boxes, and a pair of scissors. You can lay out the outer wall then leave a rectangular door in which your kids can enter the fort. In each corner of the wall, you can build a small tower where you can also provide a small slit as the arrow loop. You can easily build battlements on the top most part of the wall to add more realism to the effect.

This is why you should build a Cardboard Fort with your child; watch Harvey play with his fort …

Wooden go-karts, often called go-carts or carts, are simple vehicles which are not self-propelled, threfore someone must push the go-kart and driver, or use the kart for going down hills, hence the prefix “go” is put before the kart. In these plans, spoked wheels are used, as this allows the driver to to turn the wheels by hand, much like on a wheelchair. Normally – the steering mechanism is very simple, and can be done by the drivers feet, or by using a length of rope to rotate the front axle, much like on old stage coaches seen on television. Typically on simple wooden kart, or soap-box-carts, there are no brakes, and as a result – are to be used for slow speeds only. It is possible to include brakes off a bycycle etc., however this complicates the build.

The simple wooden go-kart, the plans of which can be seen below can be made by anyone. Only simple common tools are required, along with some materials easily found at home, or which can be purchased very cheaply in a DIY (do-it-yourself) , or hobby shop.

1. Place the neodymium magnet on the negative terminal of the battery. The magnet used here was 0.5 inches in diameter and 0.25 inches thick. Anything near that size will work, but normal ceramic magnets are too weak. You can buy neodymium magnets at K&J Magnetics.

2. If your copper wire is insulated you need to remove the insulation. Bend the wire into any shape you want, but be sure it makes good contact with the positive terminal of the battery as well as with the circumference of the magnet. Bending the wire into a pretty yet functional shape takes lots of patience. See the photos for two examples of shapes you can make.

3. Balance the copper wire on top of the battery and make small adjustments in the shape until it spins quickly and easily. The battery will only last a few minutes with the wire on it.

You can probably find all of the materials for this simple project in your house. When you make one of these and throw it in the air, it will explode mid-flight. The principle of this project is the same as the dry ice bomb (squeezing too much gas into too small a container). Carbon dioxide gas forms as the result of a chemical reaction between the vinegar and baking soda. This project is safer than the dry ice bombs because the explosion is much weaker, but you should still be careful and avoid getting the chemicals near your face.

how-to

1. Take a 35mm film canister, with a flip-top, and a bottle cap. Make sure that the bottle cap fits INSIDE the canister. You want to separate the vinegar from the baking soda for a small period of time, and this is one way to accomplish this.

2. Fill the bottle cap with Baking Soda. Pour enough Vinegar in the canister to fill about 1/4 full.

3. Place the cap of Baking Soda inside the canister so that the cap is floating on top of the vinegar.

4. Here’s the tricky part: You do not want the vinegar and Baking Soda to touch but you need to put the top on the canister and place it on a flat surface. Do not shake the solution!

5. Toss the canister up in the air with a spin! CO2 is made by the fixture of Vinegar and Baking Soda. It makes the top to fly off the canister and explode!!!
